According to GHG calculations, it is estimated that in 2021 the Carbon Footprint of AGC Glass Europe was 3.9 million tonnes of CO2 eq.*
Results show that the main CO2 emissions hotspots are mainly attributed to fuel combustion, raw materials production from our suppliers, raw materials decarbonization, and electricity purchased. All the mentioned categories represent 85% of the total AGC CO2 emissions. The overview of the emissions is given in the table below.
(*) Results include Automotive and Architectural division – AGC sites in 19 countries (Russia included).
Fuel combustion and raw material decarbonization – Scope 1:
In 2021 natural gas combustion emitted approximately 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 eq. and raw material decarbonization emitted 512 kt of CO2. These emissions are attributed to conventional carbonated raw materials necessary to glass production (ex. Limestone, Dolomite, and Sodium carbonate), and to producing direct CO2 emissions from decarbonization inside our glass melting furnaces.
Electricity purchase – Scope 2:
In 2021, considering the average consumption of all AGC’s sites, the amount of electricity purchased represented almost 428,000 tonnes of CO2 eq.
Raw Materials Production – Category 1
Approximately 1 million tonnes of CO2 were attributed to the production of the raw materials which are needed to manufacture AGC glass products (64% of the total CO2 emissions in Scope 3).
With the purpose to progress towards its climate change goals, AGC Glass Europe uses the GHG Protocol to account for, report, and mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions occurring in its corporate value chain.
More on our environmental footprint
Our environmental impact
The major environmental impact of glass production is caused by atmospheric emissions from melting activities.
Our roadmap to carbon neutrality
AGC's holistic approach to achieve CO2-neutral glass production by 2050, not only includes decarbonising the glass production processes but also eliminating all CO2 emissions from the supply chain upstream of our processes and other indirect emissions.
Our positive impact on environment
For each tonne of CO2 emitted by AGC Glass Europe activities, more than 9 tonnes of CO2 are avoided thanks to the use of our products!
